So, I know what you're asking yourself… why on Earth are they called $400 Cookies? Well, there's a story behind that!

Urban Legend (okay, my sister-in-law told me, that counts right?) tells that someone asked a famous restaurant for the recipe, and was given the paper copy, along with a bill for $400 — she in turn, shared the recipe all over to make sure everyone could try it, and not get stuck with the bill! While I am pleased to share that these cookies will NOT cost you an arm and a leg, they would be worth it if they did!

Now, onto the recipe!

$400 Chocolate Chip Cookies

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 pound butter
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 4 cups flour
  • 5 cups oatmeal (measure 5 full cups, then grind to a powder)
  • 2 tsp of baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1  bag mini M&M’s
  • 1 handful dark chocolate chips (or to your liking)
  • 1 handful semi-sweet chocolate chips (or to your liking)

INSTRUCTIONS

Cream butter, sugar and brown sugar together. Add eggs and vanilla. Sift and add flour, ground oatmeal, soda and salt. Add M&M’s and chocolate chips. (Note – this dough is THICK. Like work-your-arm-out thick. Don’t be worried, it’s supposed to be that way! Sometimes, I put the dough on the counter, and fold in the M&M’s and chocolate chips in by kneading it like bread. True story! Worth the effort… PROMISE!)

Place golf ball size balls on ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 375 for 8-10 min. or until light brown.

    • Great question! I measure 5 cups, and then grind it. (Use the blender to grind it up, it makes it quick and easy!)
      XO, Kerianne

    • It is indeed!! It makes them so soft, and chewy! (and even my oatmeal-hating son loves them, because when it’s ground up, he has no idea!) XO, Kerianne

    • Hi Rachel! YES! They freeze so well! I bake them, and freeze them in batches. They thaw beautifully every time! ~Kerianne

  1. This sounds like the perfect recipe to modify slightly to make lactation cookies by adding some flax and Brewers yeast. I’ve been looking for a great recipe that I can modify and make up a batch or two for the freezer and I think I found it! Thank you!!

    • What an amazing idea!! I love the creativity! You are totally right, I have made lactation cookies for friends in the past, and it’s hard to find the right base to hold up to the brewers yeast, and flax… this recipe is so dense, and yummy it would be perfect! Thanks for sharing, Shannon! ~Kerianne
