TURNING MOTIVATION INTO DEDICATION

Motivation can be tricky. You can be motivated to read this post, but then what happens once you're done? Nobody but YOU can light a fire under you that will make change happen. Why? Because different people are motivated in different ways! What works great for one person may be a complete train wreck for someone else.

While I've got all kinds of great tips (if I do say so, myself!) for how to stay motivated, only you will know what works best for you. Find whatever it is that lights a spark in you to make change happen and you'll be so glad that you did!

Once you actually get motivated to make this change happen, the key to completing your journey (whether it's fitness, finances, organization, etc.) lies in how dedicated you are to finish. Motivation is a huge part in this, but remember that dedication is what is going to get you to the finish line!

HOW TO GET AND STAY MOTIVATED

Now that I've touched on dedication and how that will get you to the finish line, let's talk about different tips that will help you with your motivation! These tips will help you get motivated to get started and will also help you to stay motivated while you're working on your goals.

BLOCK YOUR TIME

daily block schedule, from Fun Cheap or Free

Alright, you've heard me say this one a lot! Blocking your time is so important and is the key to carving out the time needed to accomplish things. If you're not sure what I'm talking about, head over to THIS post to get all of the deets on what a block schedule is and how it will change. your. life.

Schedule out your tasks and to-do lists so that you know exactly what you need to get done, along with when you're going to do it. This will help to keep you organized and help you to stay on track. It's a heck of a lot easier to stay motivated when you know the specifics of what you need to be doing and a timeline of when it needs to be done.

My favorite way to keep track of this is with my new Productivity Planner! (Shameless plug, here!) It has finally been released, so you can find out more about it HERE. There's also a free printable version of the block schedule that you can get HERE.

I've also seen Freebs keep up with it on their phones. It doesn't matter to me HOW you do it, just start blocking your time in whatever way works best for you and see how much it can change your world!

BREAK YOUR TASKS DOWN INTO J.O.B.S

One of my favorite productivity quotes is: “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” I know, I know, that's a gross thought. But it's true! Break your elephant down into J.O.B.s (Just One Bite) and you'll have that sucker gone in no time!

The same goes for whatever task/project/area of your life that you're trying to stay motivated for. Break your fitness goal of losing 20 pounds into daily workouts. Instead of just saying “I want to save money this year,” break it down into weekly goals that you can work on daily. If you've got an area of your house that needs to be decluttered and organized, break that down into individual tasks that you can complete in a shorter amount of time.

Break your J.O.B.s down into small “bites” and put those on your blocks. Work on them every day and see how motivated and productive it makes you feel to see those tasks being completed!

TRACK YOUR WINS TO STAY MOTIVATED

Another great way to stay motivated is to track your wins. Who really wants to keep working towards a goal if you don't see any progress? Chances are, you probably do have progress, but you just can't tell if you're not keeping track of it. Instead of focusing on what isn't done, focus on what you have done!

There are a lot of ways that you can track your wins to help you to stay motivated. My Productivity Planner has a section where you can write your daily and monthly wins. You could also use a notebook. Regardless of where you keep track of them, write down your wins throughout the day or week. It will help you to keep on track while also letting you see how far you've come!

WRITE THINGS DOWN

When you write your wins down, it actually acts as a brain dump and allows your brain to stop feeling anxious about that thing that you've been trying to remember to do.

Writing something down also helps to embed it stronger in your memory! Crazy, right?! That will help it to come more to the forefront of your mind rather than staying at the back of your mind where you're more likely to forget about it. This is really helpful for daily tasks that you're not used to doing, but you would like for them to become habits (such as working out or planning meals).

There's also something so. dang. satisfying. about crossing something off of your list of things to do! It feels good and it boosts your endorphins and motivation in your brain because it shows that you accomplished something. After that, you're motivated to move on to the next one and do it again!

TRACK YOUR PROGRESS TO STAY MOTIVATED

using a daily or monthly goal tracker, from Fun Cheap or Free

Much like writing down your wins, tracking your progress is so helpful to stay motivated. It helps you to stay on track and is something that you can do daily. The Productivity Planner has a monthly tracker section that you can write down the task and color in as you go. You could also keep track in a notebook or an app on your phone.

Break your daily tasks down into small, manageable goals. Let's say your overall goal is to organize your house. Break that down and give yourself 5 minutes a day, 5 days a week to work on organizing. That will help you to break that big goal down into smaller bites that are easily done and tracked!

WORK IN SPRINTS, NOT MARATHONS

This is another tip that will really help you to stay motivated! Don't just tell yourself that you have 5 hours to get the house organized. Chances are, you won't know where to begin and you'll feel so overwhelmed that you'll never want to get started. Not to mention that you'll probably be exhausted by the time those 5 hours are up!

Instead, set timers and allow yourself smaller chunks of time to get things done. Rather than trying to “run a marathon” for 5 hours, allow yourself 10-15 minute “sprints” to get things done. You may find that at the end of your timer, you're motivated to continue working on that project or task.

This works for a variety of tasks, such as organization, working out, and even cleaning. It also works for things such as budgeting or meal planning! Give yourself a specific amount of time where you're only focusing on your task at hand. This means that you need to put your phone down and do whatever you have to do (such as making sure that your kids are entertained) so that you're not thinking about or doing anything else while your timer is going.

REWARD YOURSELF TO STAY MOTIVATED

using a timer to stay motivated, from Fun Cheap or Free

Once your timer goes off, reward yourself for all of that focus and hard work! This is a great way to stay motivated. Maybe it's allowing yourself the same amount of time to sit down and relax after working so hard. Or it could be treating yourself to your favorite candy that's hiding in your pantry.

You may even want to allow yourself the same amount of time to get lost on social media. Rather than letting that get in the way of your motivation and productivity, have it be your reward once you finish your task! Give yourself whatever reward will get you motivated to focus on the task at hand while your timer is going.

This also works really well for larger goals, too! Is your goal to save a certain amount of money so that you can go on a vacation and pay for it with cash? That vacation at the end is the reward that you get for being so frugal and saving that money. That is what will keep you motivated to reach that end goal!

FIND AN ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER

This is probably the biggest tip that will help you to stay motivated. Find someone that you trust and share your goal with them. Sometimes, that's all that it takes! However, if you know that you'll need more accountability than that, make sure that it's someone who will check in on you to see how you're doing.

Now, just because they're an accountability partner doesn't mean that they're in charge of motivating you and keeping you motivated. Just because you want to get healthy and go to the gym doesn't mean that your accountability partner does. Don't let the fact that they may not want to go to the gym with you demotivate you. Find someone who will help you to stay motivated in spite of how motivated they are to reach that same goal.

    Jordan,
This block schedule thing is blowing my mind!!!
Do you have a downloadable version of the whole productivity planner for sale? I would love to try and print and bind my own on a slightly smaller scale. I know if I have a large planner I have to lug around with me, I’ll use it for a week then eventually it will get left behind (not that I’m speaking from experience, and have years worth of empty planners). Anyway just asking! Thank you so much for all your inspiration!

Isn’t it the best?! Unfortunately, we don’t have a PDF version of the planner right now. There is a 3-month version of the Productivity Planner that’s smaller than the 6-month that you could try out and see how you like it! They’re sold out right now, but we should be having more in stock soon! If that sounds more up your alley, then sign up for our newsletter so that you know about them as soon as they’re released because they won’t last long!

I can’t afford the boot amp, and I feel like I’m so close to getting a routine down. Was wondering, when do you fit in your goals in your weekly:daily block schedule? Thank!!

What kind of goals are you talking about? If you find that you don’t have enough time in your normal day, even by filling everything in to your block schedule, then you may have to wake up earlier to fit those goals in. Or wake up earlier and bump something else in your block up so that you can fit your goal later in your day. Just make sure that you’re going to be early enough and are getting enough sleep in you do choose to get up earlier! Hope that helps 🙂

Do you know when the planner will be back in stock? Its ridiculous how hard it is to find a planner that is organized the way that works best for me and yours is exactly what I have been looking for. I homeschool our kiddos who unless I am organized and have everything down to see and cross off I loose focus and tend to get stressed way more often because I do not do well with going with the flow in every day tasks and living.

They’re restocking soon! Go to thepagecompany.com and get on the list so that you can be among the first to know when they’re released! While you wait on them to come back in stock, check out the block schedule. That should work for you in the meantime! 🙂
