Here's a reiteration of the tips for you:

Invest in a smartphone:

How to get a great deal on a smartphone and not go broke on data plans! + 11 other techy hacks from

Being able to download apps is a crucial part of your techy money-saving journey! You can often find refurbished, or used phones on Ebay, or your local online classifieds for a screaming deal. Use WI-FI instead of one of the expensive data plans that come with all the newfangled, fancy phones. It will save you a TON in the long-run!

Avoid a bulky wallet:

All those loyalty cards you carry around, yeah, you don't need to bring them with you! Take a picture of both sides of the cards, and keep those photos in an album all to themselves. (I like to use free online storage programs, like Picasa or Photobucket to keep my photos safe, organized, and ready when I need them.)

Shop online… and get PAID for it!

This one is a no brainer, and you're straight up CRAZY if you don't take advantage of it! Ebates is my favorite money-saving techy hack! Haven't heard of Ebates, well, let me do you the favor of filling you in on this amazing site! Essentially, Ebates pays you for spending money online… for FREE. You can install an extension to your Chrome browser, and it will literally babysit you through getting paid for your shopping habits – when you visit a site that has an Ebates program setup, you will see this popup on the right hand side of your screen, which includes the cash back percentage you will receive for that site –

Ebates is the largest cash back website around, which is good news for you, because they have partnered with pretty much every company around! Sephora, Ebay, Walmart, Target, Old Navy, J Crew; wherever you shop, chances are good they work with Ebates. My favorite part about Ebates, is they track your purchases, and “bank” up your cash back, and pay it out quarterly in a BIG FAT CHECK. Yep, that's what they call it!

Want an example of the awesome savings you can get through Ebates? Well, Macy's has a KILLER 25% off sale (+ free shipping if you spend over $25) going on, plus 8% back from Ebates! So, not only do you get the discount, and the shipping, you get money BACK on top of it! SCORE! Don't miss this one, you could stock up for summer, and even back-to-school!

If you haven't tried Ebates, now is the time, because they are offering double cash back for a limited time. So, hurry! Go sign up, and refer a few friends — you get paid for bringing new people to the Ebates party, too! (And, you can feel good about bringing your friends and family around to this one. They will thank you for it!)

Don't let deals expire!!!

Is there a worse feeling than finding a coupon/gift card/gift certificate that you knew you wanted to use, and finding that it expired? BUMMER! Don't let this happen to you. Put dates in the calendar on your phone and be sure to set a reminder at least 1 week in advance. I like to do 3 weeks, then 1 week, then the week of, just to be sure. It will ensure you use those babies before they end up in the recycling bin.

Cancel free trials before you get charged:

Bust out that calendar on your phone once more, and put a reminder in your phone to cancel free trials before you get charged. Auto-renewals always sneak up on you, this will keep you on top of things, and make sure you don't get charged unexpectedly.

Never lose a receipt again:

Remember THIS POST about digitizing receipts? Take pictures of your receipts and store them in an online app like Evernote, or, in an online photo album like I mentioned before. Just make sure the barcode is easily visible so they can scan it from your phone screen! Then you always have them at your fingertips and never have to worry about sorting through a pile of wrinkled receipts again.

Make money from your phone:

We all know I'm a huge fan of selling your stuff! With Spring Cleaning time in full-effect, be sure to download apps that help you post things to your local classifieds. I'm in Utah and love the app, or you could find a Craigslist app. Heck, even Facebook is a great resource for selling things! Find a local “Facebook Yardsale” in your city or area. I've sold TONS of stuff from Facebook!

As you're cleaning out your closets, garage, and whatever else, use those apps to post pictures and sell things you don't need. If you want to throw a full-blown yard sale here's everything you need to know. Otherwise, this is a great way to sell one-off items as you go!

As far as digitizing receipts, have you encountered stores that don’t allow you to show it for the return? Does Walmart and Target accept a digitzed receipt?

    • AvatarFunCheapOrFree says

I’m still a “digitizing newbie” myself, but I’m finding that most stores are offering to email me my receipts anyway, so I’m guessing that will be the way of the future before we know it! I figure having a digital copy is better than not having any at all (since I seem to lose them from time to time) so maybe work with both paper AND digital, until you get a feel for whether 100% digital is doable or not.

So I’m going to try Amazon prime for the free trial period. I live in a small town, do lots of online shopping and like the free photo storage idea. What are your thoughts/tips/etc???

    • AvatarFunCheapOrFree says

I LOVE Amazon prime! So for our family it’s worth the membership, especially with their new video streaming (like Netflix). My biggest piece of advice is to practice restraint. It can be tempting to order everything off of Amazon because it’s so easy and gets to your house so fast. Just stick to what you for sure need so you don’t over-spend and you’ll be fine!
