Saving Craving! Savings Tip: Produce co-ops

If you love fresh produce for a good price, and if you love supporting locally grown food, then I have a great tip for you!

My aunt told me about this food co-op she's a part of. I joined and have loved it! There are many co-ops out there, the one I use is http://www.BountifulBaskets.org. They service AZ, CO, ID, MT, NV, OR, UT, TX, WA, WY.

The way that one works is, every 2 weeks or so they send an email saying that new “baskets” are ready. There are different baskets you can order. I typically do a conventional produce basket which is 50% fruit 50% vegetable. You sign up, pay with a credit card (about $15 per basket), then pick your date/time/location that you will pick up your basket. You then get a great laundry basket full of fresh, locally grown food! The baskets are a decent size, so my friend Shannon and I actually split a basket! That way we're only paying about $7.50 each and get plenty of produce to last us for 2 weeks.

This is a great way to get all your produce shopping done in one stop, and you are supporting small farmers that don't produce enough to supply the big conglomerates. The fun part? You never know exactly what you are going to get in your basket. It's only foods that are in season, so you could get interesting new things to try! One week there were persimmons…I had no idea what they were at first!

As I mentioned he company I use is http://www.BountifulBaskets.org . They are now taking orders for this week. You should give it a try! Here are the baskets they have available this week:

  1. Laura – you might be surprised! Sometimes the small towns are the first ones to get the co-ops, because they are closest to all the agriculture! Just look online, in the phone book, or ask around at your local markets or feed stores. If there isn't one, you could always start your own. There is information about it all over the internet. Good luck!
