How to use HOT ROLLERS! (…and actually make it look good!) Q&A Monday

How to use hot rollers...and actually make it look good! from

For Focus on Change MonthΒ this month, one of the 3o Days of Positive Change challenges is to try something new with your hair. In honor of this challenge, I decided to dust off my old, unused and sadly neglected hot rollers and give them the ol' college try. YOWSA! The result was way better than I imagined!

I posted the results pic on Instagram and the response for a video tutorial was overwhelming! So for Q&A MondayΒ today I'm showing you exactly how to use hot rollers…and actually make the results look good πŸ™‚Β I did a video showing my complete steps, start to finish. Watch it online or click and watch below:

Pretty easy, right??

Here are the products I use and love:

Dry shampoo, only $2.88 and works like a champ

I don’t have any curlers lying around collecting dust but I’m totally going to but some. Those are just the easy fluffy curls I’ve been looking for πŸ™‚

Loved that! I used to have long hair, but have sportet the pixiecut for a few years now. Just recently decided to grow it out again – and this video made me even more excited about that. So I guess five years or so from now my hair will be as long as yours πŸ˜€ :D, and I will so be getting out those curlers πŸ™‚

Haha yes in 5 years just come back to this tutorial and you’ll be good to go! πŸ™‚ Funny story…in my next life I will TOTALLY have a platinum blonde pixie cut. If only my darn head wasn’t so big, I’d do it tomorrow! So let’s just trade lives for a day and get it out of our systems, eh?

This was very helpful. I have wavy hair but I need to use heat to tame the frizz. I paid 40 bucks for some rollers that I had zero clue how to use! ( yes, I was yanking them out.) thanks, Jordan

Love the music and the speeding through the repetitive steps. Makes the videos enjoyable to watch and not too long. Nice job FCC crew!

Thanks! So glad you like it πŸ™‚ I’m OCD and a control freak so I do all the posts, editing, commenting, emailing and way too much other stuff myself, haha. So I’m glad you like it thanks!

When I use hot curlers (or even a curling iron) my hair looks fantastic. For about 35 minutes, the the long curls drag and the rest turns to frizz. I tried using all kinds of products and it will last a couple of hours but by lunch time I am left with a sticky wadded mess. I mention this to recommend borrowing from a friend some curlers before the purchase to see if your hair will work out OK.
If I am desperate for the curls I have found that reheating the curlers while in my hair with a blow dryer can make them last about 2 hours longer (high heat, low fan aimed into the curler cylinder, not at the hair). It is tedious and time consuming though–I takes about 50 minutes hands on time (and 30 minutes for each cooling time) for my hair to last 2 hours.

That’s a great tip! I hadn’t thought of that! Yes, curling hair can be hard. I learned that when I use ZERO product, it lasts longer. But honestly, climate has a lot to do with it. My hair doesn’t hold curl nearly well in humid climates like it does in dry Utah. Good thing braids and buns are in right now, eh? Best of luck and thanks again for the tip!

This helped me tremendously! No, I don’t have long hair. And no I didn’t use hot rollers. One thing that stood out to me though was you took the hair on the top of your head and rolled it towards the back of your head even though you wear your hair parted on the side! I wear my hair parted on the side and I always roll my hair in the direction of my part. My hair is baby-fine and thin and I wear it in a chin length bob. Yesterday I used my hot air round brush and tried rolling my bangs and front section like you did. Wow! What a difference. My hair had so much more height and it looks like I have a lot more hair!! Thank you!!!

I’m so glad you liked it!!! And thanks for finding tips that work for you, in a video that normally wouldn’t be something that would work for you. Very creative of you! Thanks for reading XOXO

I have used hot rollers off and on for years. I have 2 sets, one with “flocking” and one without. I live in texas so humidity is always on the menu. I have always yanked them out, but today I am trying it your way. I will ease them out and see what happens. I have found over the years that clean hair with a little cheap extra hold mousse keeps the curls in longer. You have inspired me to roll out my rollers today πŸ™‚

If you will use end papers (you can buy them at Sally Beauty Supply for like $2 ~ they are used for perms) then you don’t have to worry about the ends poking out or the ends being kinked when you roll them. Makes it a ton easier to roll and your ends are silky! Tip: use end papers when rolling your little girls hair into sponge rollers and you have not have fuzzy ends any more πŸ˜‰

    Hey Jordan,

Great video. When I started it I realized we use the same background intro music (love it) Then I realized I have the same curlers. I hand’t thought about doing 3 sections on the crown then my sides. Normally I just grab and roll whatever. I am absolutely going to try this next time I use my rollers.
    have a great friday

I bought cirkelredeneringen and tried it… I left the rollers in for 45 min… When I took them out I had a little swing in my hair, no curl. It was flat after 1 hour πŸ™
So jealous off easy to curl hair πŸ™
