Girl talk.

girl talk

Guys, I've missed you! If you haven't noticed, I've been a bit ghost-like the last few weeks and it's due to a number of things. I feel bad that I've been neglecting you so I thought I'd word-vomit a little update of everything that's been going on around here, girl talk-style, so you know I haven't completely forgotten about you!

  • The blog:

I have a confession to make…I'm a bit burned out of blogging. Don't panic, this is nothing new. This happens every so often, and especially in the summer. It's just that time of year where I really enjoy (and need to) unplug and refresh myself, connect with my kids, and get outside. It's hard for me to find the motivation to give up precious play/swim/family time to hunker down at my computer and be productive on it. It's a curse, really. So please forgive me as I slow down for the next few months. BUT…don't worry, I'm not going anywhere. I will still post, but quality, not quantity, is the name of the game. I'm telling myself that I will try to dedicate Tuesdays and Thursdays to blogging, so maybe I'll fall into some kind of routine…?…let's hope?…

But in general, you might find myself being more selective about the blogging life from here on out. As a mom of 3 kids 4 and under (soon to be 4 kids under 5!), my life is crazy even without a blog to run! My ultimate priority is my family, and I've had to do some major soul-searching recently and reassess my life path to make sure I'm headed where I should be headed. Turns out, I've been getting a bit distracted lately. Thus, I've had to make some pivots and the blog is one of them. So again, I'm not going anywhere, but you might not hear from me every waking moment of every day between the blog and social media. So be sure to leave comments and let me know what you want to hear/see/read so when I post it's exactly what you want to see!

  • The home life:

So, huge things are happening in the Page Household… As many of you might know, Bubba is an entrepreneur. About 5 years ago he started and he's been working his tail off at it. He's a fabulous entrepreneur. He recently started a 2nd business (, sort of on accident. He brought the idea to Google's “Start-up Weekend” competition a few months ago on a whim and his idea ended up winning the competition. That gained his idea a lot of press and attention from investors, business partners, potential employees, the media, and entrepreneur programs from around the country. He decided he'd better ride the momentum and make his idea a reality, and next thing you know, BAM. A new business was formed. So now he's trying to keep Launch Leads up and running to pay the bills, but start a complicated tech company at the same time. Oh, and meet the demands of his needy wife that refuses to let him be glued to his phone and computer all day. Not easy, folks!

Anywho, Bubba's new business is taking him to Boulder, CO for the next 3 months. He'll be coming back and forth as much as he can. So yes, that means I will be basically playing the role of single mom for a while. And yes, I'm scared spitless. Single moms in the world, I do not know how you do it, I admire you more than you know! Any advice? Please? Help?

As you can see, all the more reason why you might hear more radio static than usual around here. Oh, and any creepers out there who are looking for a single mom to pray on, keep looking. Between my 120lb dog who can rip someone to shreds, my hand gun, assault rifle, neighborhood watch, and alarm system, it's really not the effort. 😉

  • The Summer

Us Page's have got a bit of a wild summer ahead of us this year. As I mentioned on Instagram, we just got back from a week-long family reunion vacation in Newport, CA with Bubba's family. There were 22 of us (12 kids!) in one beach house for a week. It was SO MUCH FUN, and yes, we even had family-wide #PageDanceParties (proven HERE).

Family vacation in Newport, CA...and these is just the kids!

Aside from family time, I am speaking at Bright Night event next week, BlogHer later this month, I'm being sent to SaveUp conference in Austin, Priya is turning 3 and Bubba is turning 31 the end of July, I'm playing single mom (as mentioned above), and aside from that I plan to overhaul my house, swim in every pool imaginable, and try to keep my sanity. I love summer, with or without all the craziness.

  • The pregnancy:

Yes, for those who missed it, I'm pregnant! I had my 18-week appointment today, in fact. It's flying by this time. Turns out pregnancy/baby #4 goes by reeeeally fast because I hardly have time to think with my 3 kids as it is. Since Bubba will be in Boulder and will miss my 20 week ultrasound, we are headed to Fetal Photos tonight to learn the gender while he's still in town. We have boy, girl, boy, so we're about due for a girl – but since I'm slightly hoping for a girl, it's for SURE going to be a boy (since that's how life happens, right??). As long as it's healthy, I'm happy though – no complaints over here! I'm usually flat-on-my-back-sick for the first few months but haven't really been sick at all this time around. Which kind of freaks me out (I'm waiting for “the catch”) but I'm hoping it's just God's gift to me for not losing my sanity thus far in life.

I'm due Dec 4 but because I have HORRIFIC varicose vein issues in my right leg, my doc induces me 1 week early, which puts me right before Thanksgiving. While being pregnant isn't top of my “favorite things” list, I LOVE the labor and delivery part of it and I can hardly wait for Thanksgiving to come. In the meantime…

What's your guess?? Boy or girl??

  • Updates that are long overdue:

Speaking in Austin and San Jose: Recently I did a survey asking if Austin or San Jose folks would want to get together while I'm in town and do a mini seminar. I've been trying for WEEKS to get it to work out, and even went so far as to reserve a meeting space in Austin. But now that Bubba's leaving town it would cost so much in child care, flights, lodging, and food to stay even one extra day on those trips, it's just not something that makes sense right now. So I have to (sadly) scratch that idea. Instead, I'm putting even more focus into Frugality Boot Camp which, this year is getting a complete facelift. I'm teaming up with Melea from in order to make it the biggest and best conference you've ever seen. Which means it's time for the next update…

MECCA Conference! Melea and I were looking for what to call our new frugal living conference. The name we settled on: MECCA: Making Every Cent Come Alive. Mecca Conf will be my Frugality Boot Camps, on steroids. More fun, more speakers, more swag, more amazing than ever. MECCA will be held in Utah on January 24. We are working on a website and nailing down speakers, and will start pre-selling tickets in September. So stay tuned and get excited, because seriously, it's going to knock your socks off! (Oh, and for those who aren't in Utah, we will be recording it and offering the conference online so you can attend virtually.)

Bomb Shelter Baby nursing covers: I asked for your help in designing a nursing cover I've been working on. Yes, it's still happening! Again, I have so many things going on in my life right now, it's just another project that is moving at a snail's pace because I'm trying to keep my priorities on my family. But don't worry, it's happening! I got the final sample last week…and sadly…wasn't 100% happy with it. It's so close, but not there yet. It has to be PERFECT. So for those who are interested, don't worry, they are coming soon and I won't stop until everything is FABULOUS – so it will be worth the wait!

  • The Guilty Pleasures:

As I'm working on creating better balance in my life, I'm working to allow for some guilty pleasures that I've long since suppressed in my life. Here are a few:

Reading. Don't get me wrong, I've always been a decent reader and have enjoyed reading (and see the great benefits of reading). But it's something that I've completely given up. That's the life of the mom and blogger – it's all about choices. I want to be a stay-at-home mom, blog, have friends over, and do all the things I do, so in order to fit it all in something has got to give. For years, it's been reading…until now! While on vacation the beach house we were at had a bunch of books. I grabbed one, read it in 2 days, and felt so liberated! I forgot how much I love it! Now that I'm home I only get to a few pages per day at most, but still, I'm loving it and am trying to find time to squeeze it in. I'm reading “My Sister's Keeper” By Jodi Picoult. It was another book I grabbed at random, but it's been a really interesting read. I'm almost 1/2 way through and wish I could hide myself on the beach and read it all day. Once done with this book I'll be needing another, got any good book recommendations? Not a big fan of romance or tons of bad language but otherwise I'm open!

Candy Crush. I'm not a gamer – at all – and don't really have any fun apps on my phone. But I downloaded it on a whim and I'm hooked. I love the puzzle aspect of it, and I love that it cuts me off and only lets me play for a short time each day (because it wants me to pay or bug my friends on FB, both of which I will never do). It's fun having a guilty pleasure once in a while.

Tomatoes. This one is random. I have never been one to even enjoy tomatoes much, but with this pregnancy I can't get enough of them! I could eat garden-fresh cherry tomatoes with a little salt all. day. long. Oh, and egg salad sandwiches and tuna sandwiches with big chunks of crunchy diced dill pickles. Quality cherry tomatoes are expensive in the store, but I figure splurging on healthy snacks is not so bad.

Dressing up my home. Again, one thing that's had to be tossed by the wayside in life is spending much time on my home. It's beautiful as-is so I've left it pretty plain. I don't DIY, don't really shop for my home, and don't put much thought into it. I wonder if the nesting instincts are kicking in early because all I want to do is throw my laundry and computer out the window and spend all day fixing up, decorating, and organizing my house. In theory.

Summer reality shows. The 3 reality shows I'm following this summer are some of my favorites: 1) The Bachelorette, 2) So You Think You Can Dance, and 3) America's Got Talent. I also watch a Chopped here and there when I can fit it in. I'm still not one to sit and watch TV (I feel unproductive) so I'll watch while folding laundry, or I'll watch on my iPad while cleaning my room or doing dishes.

WHEEW. I feel better. Told you it would be word-vomit. But everyone needs a little girl talk once in a while, right?

Nice to hear from you! Wow, sounds like your family is doing awesome, congratulations to your husband!

I am like you and love reading but rarely have time for it. My girlfriend suggested The Hunger Games series and I.was.hooked! I read each of them in a couple days. Also, Sarah Jio has great books! So, that’s my suggestion. 🙂 What was the book you read in 2 days? I’m now I’m need of another good book.

Jordan, wow congrats on all of the changes in your family! One of your strengths is coming across to the reader as a best-friend-I’ve-never-met, and that will not change even as your blog changes course! I personally love the quality over quantity, and of course take all the family time you need. It is hard with two 1 year old twins when I am left alone for a week at a time, I will be thinking of you this summer. Don’t worry about us little old readers, we’ll be here after everything’s calmed down! Glad you had a good vacay! 🙂

Although I’m not a single mom, I feel like I sort of am because my husband is in the Navy. When he goes away for 9 months on a deployment, it’s unbelievably hard but a little magic happens and I get a little stronger and a little more organized and just a little more put together. I know that sounds weird but it’s happened to me 3 times. I don’t have family nearby and my oldest is 3 (and my twins are 1 1/2) so when I really feel like I’m struggling, I turn to friends. I wouldn’t be able to do it without friends and neighbors. So turn to your loved ones, let them help you and pray time goes by fast 🙂

So nice to read your update! Glad you and the fam are doing well. Congrats to your husband and his accomplishment! I love reading as well. I’m reading “What Alice Forgot.” A woman falls asleep as a 29 year old woman pregnant with her first child and wakes up as a 39 year old woman with three children. She has no memory of the last 10 years of her life! I also love ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ so I’m a happy camper too. Take care and hope to hear from you soon! Try to rest a little (haha, right?!?)

You are supermom! Just reading that post made me feel overwhelmed! Haha! But that’s so exciting that you guys have so much awesome stuff going on! And yay for a new baby!!!

  7. AvatarKathleen says

    God bless you!!
I can tell you did some serous soul searching and in the end came out with some great wisdom!! It’s scary, yes, but you’re being lead appropriately. Your husband and children ARE the biggest gift you’ve been given and caring for THEM is your primary role; we just are so blessed by the added benefit of getting some of you also!!
I’m believing for a girl for you and will cover you in prayer daily, I promise, until you and Bubba are reunited again. You’ll do fine, you’ll learn new things and find new strengths. I’m excited for you! If I lived closer I would come be your assistant, but……:(
And I love everything Michelle wrote above. Take the time you need to be the best you can be for your family. Relax and enjoy yourself and your pregnancy.
We get it…. We love you and we support you!
    Happy Summer!

He does; He led me to you and your site!! And as we know, meetings are no mistake. Feeling so blessed to have a new BFF!! 😉
And that other persons comment was spot on; you DO make everyone feel as if they’re your best friends. It’s a lovely Frugal Family you’ve built here and I’m honored to be a part of it!!
Now go eat some tomatoes and sit by the pool! 🙂

The single mom thing is probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I always feel like that description is insufficient too, since almost every single mom is also at least a part-time, if not full-time, if not full-time AND part-time (like I was) working mom. It is the single hardest thing I’ve ever done – in fact, the coping techniques you learn as a single parent (can’t forget the AWESOME dads out there that are doing it too!) could be the best blog idea the world has ever seen…if only those single, working parents out there ever had time to sit long enough to write a blog!

I could give you boat-loads of advice (most learned from doing things wrong, correcting, then doing them better), but this is the best I can give and it might just save your sanity: let go of your standards for how “right” things should be done. Focus on your kids, don’t worry about the dust gathering on the furniture, and don’t apologize for doing that. Leave some dirty dishes in the sink every so often and GO TO BED EARLY! Consciously choose NOT to be “productive,” and instead lie on the couch and feel your baby kick (or you’ll miss it).

Fun ways to get through it: let the kids take their bath in the kiddie pool in the backyard – just drag the soap out there, suds them up and spray them down with the water hose. Have a picnic outside for dinner and use paper plates and no utensils (all finger foods). Recycle the trash and move on with your evening – no dishes! Ask your mom to visit and give her laundry duty – my mom does it for me every so often and I LOVE her for it. Let the kids watch a movie on blankets in the living room and fall asleep there. Heck, lie down with them and call it a slumber party. Sure, it’s all breaking routine, but it gives you a break and they love it. It’ll save you. Good luck – you’ll get through it and be closer to your little ones than you ever thought possible.

This is, quite possibly, the best comment ever to appear on this blog. Thank you SO MUCH for your words of wisdom!! And AMEN – I would LOVE to read a blog about single parenting because I’m sure it would teach us all a lot. Thanks for sharing!!! XOXO

OMCOCONUTS…..I totally agree!! Julia…. Wow and WOW! I have no children and I’ve learned so much! This really was great and I can share this with many (single) moms.
Thank you, Julia for your insight and wisdom!!!

Oh man!! I wondered why you haven’t been on my feed lately. I have missed your updates like crazy, but I’m glad you and your family are doing so well! Congratulations on the baby, and I’m gonna say it’s a girl, just because you get matching pairs!

I was a single mom for a little while, and all I can really say is find an outlet. You’re gonna need that detach at the end of the day to reduce burnout and help with the oncoming postpartum hormone party.

Best of luck to you and yours and I hope you enjoy the rest of this gorgeous summer!
