The Best Homemade Salsa Recipe Using a BLENDER!

Jul 11, 2020 | Food, Recipes

Looking for a FOOLPROOF homemade salsa recipe? It's not only out-of-this-WORLD good (Bubba says it's better than restaurant salsa, which is saying a lot…) but it's embarrassingly easy. All you need is a blender!

There is just nothing better than a bag of crisp tortilla chips and fresh, homemade salsa. Mhmmm. The original salsa recipe is made from canned tomatoes, but I've also used fresh tomatoes instead, and it's just as easy and delicious! I have my ah-mazing friend, Tiff, to thank for this recipe! Thanks, girl!

I have really come to appreciate the years when I've had a garden. It’s a great way to eat fresh food and save money at the same time… Plus, it's the perfect set-up for a batch of quick homemade salsa. Either way, whether you use canned tomatoes or fresh, the ability to whip up a batch of quick salsa without going to the store is the epitome of what glorious shelf cooking is all about!

A FEW SALSA RECIPE TIPS

ingredients for homemade salsa recipe, from Fun Cheap or Free

  • If you're using fresh tomatoes, gather all that you have from the garden and fridge that need to be used up.
  • Make sure you give them a really good washing before using.
  • If you don't have any fresh tomatoes to use up, grab those canned tomatoes!
  • Gather all other ingredients and start prepping.
  • Make sure you cut the stems off the tomatoes if you're using fresh. You don't want those in there!
  • Once you've washed, cut, and prepped your ingredients, toss them in and blend them up.
  • If you prefer a thinner consistency for salsa, blend at a steady rate.
  • If you prefer your homemade salsa chunky, pulse that baby a few times until it's juuuuust right. Of course, you HAVE to test with a chip just to be sure! 😉

HOW TO FREEZE IT

pouring salsa into a bowl, from Fun Cheap or Free

One of the best things about this homemade salsa recipe is how much it makes! Before it goes bad, divide it into mason jars to freeze for a later date. If you freeze in jars, opt for the wide-neck jars or give plenty of headspace in the narrow neck jars to allow for expansion (because they WILL break if you don't)!

Salsa is just one of those things that freezes so nicely! If you don't have the freezer space, you could also use a pressure canner to preserve the jars so they are shelf-stable. Either way, don't let it go to waste!

If you roast all your fresh ingridients before blending it adds an amazing depth of flavor.

To make it even easier, use four small or two large cans of tomatoes, and one can of HOT Rotel. Then you don’t have to mess with a jalapeño! I make salsa this way all the time- it’s delicious!

Have you try to freeze the excess just in freezer bags? Thinking of making a batch today but it looks like it makes a lot but I would love to have fresh salsa on hand just to throw in a bowl on the weekends! Just discovered you YouTube channel and your blog, I’m now following you on Instagram too! Thanks for the inspiration! @barefootbysea

I wish we could get Rotel here in Australia, I can’t even think of a substitute. I’d love to meet my own salsa, we go through a lot in our family.

I just use diced tomatoes! I rarely use rotel. I just add some extra seasonings and jalapeño for spice.

HI! I tried this in my Vitamix; it doesn’t have a pulse feature. I ended up making, what looked like, V8. Do you have any tips on how to keep the consistancy chunkyish?

    Reply
    • FunCheapOrFree

You need a food processor then, or something that can quickly hand-chop! or just blend it for a quick second or two. But every blender should have a pulse feature, check your manual!
