The gift of self-reliance

Those moments when you really wish you had a photographer that magically followed you around so you didn't always have to rely on a selfie…

Brought my little sidekick (Priya) with me to speak to a gymnasium full of women tonight. I love speaking to groups. In fact, public speaking will beat out just about any offer. I love seeing your faces, and making eye contact, and feeding off the energy of the audience. Screens are so cold! (Literally. And figuratively. They don't even laugh at my jokes.) But tonight I did things a bit differently.

Atypical of me, I skipped the tips tonight. You can find those all over my blog, social media, and videos. I focused instead on finding peace through financial self-reliance.

My heart nearly burst as I bore my soul to the group that you CAN have the life of your dreams! You can! It's possible! It's ripe for the taking! And along with that, you can help others. You can grow and learn and conquer. We all were given the gift of life and existence. Plenty of people die before we do. We are still here because we still have a purpose! We each have a light that isn't meant to be hid…it's meant to be put on a hill to light the way for others.

I talked about how we found ourselves drowning in ($15k) credit card debt, hopeless and fearful…then turned it around in 13 months on just a $31k income and have never looked back since. The greatest blessing we have ever given ourselves and our children is the gift of self-reliance. To be debt free (except for a mortgage) is an indescribable feeling (said arms wide on a magic carpet of course…).

Do yourselves a favor and just try it. Just try it! I'll triple-dog-dare you if I have to! Be brave and do what it takes to get your debt out the door for good. Do whatever it takes to build up your savings and reach your financial goals. Not everyone can do it. Not everyone is brave enough, or patient enough, or gritty enough. It takes major cajones to say no. To sell a car. To pull your kids from dance or soccer. To move to a more affordable area. To go back to school. To apply for a promotion. To start that business you've always dreamed of. To make your teenager get a job and stop milking you. Whatever it is for you, it takes guts. Not everyone can do it but YOU can. I know you can!

When I say “if I can do it, anyone can do it” I mean that. I don't like finances or money, even still. I'm terrible at math. I've never even taken a finance class before. But I did it. We did it. We sold our car, and couches, and stopped eating out, and shopped second-hand, and did whatever it took. We got out of debt and have since achieved every single financial goal we have ever put our minds to. Not sure how or why, but along the way I've been given the blessed opportunity to helps others do it too. I'm just a mom. I'm just like you! Sure, maybe I like talking to groups and being on TV. Maybe I have a blog and you don't. But I'm no different than you! We are in the trenches together and  I KNOW YOU (we) CAN DO IT.

So just do IT. Whatever it is! What's stopping you? Are you afraid it's going to take too long to get out of debt? Or sell your house? Or set a budget? Or learn to cook? Or finish school? News flash…the time is going to pass anyway, so you might as well grab the wheel and make some magic happen.

The gift of self-reliance

Whether it's my blog, or my Budget Boot Camp (on sale right now when you use the code “SPRING“!), or Dave Ramsey, or the Tooth Fairy or whomever or whatever gets you there! Just start making changes in your life, small ones if nothing else, and in time you will get exactly where you want to go.

Self-reliance is a gift. One that I am DANG proud of fighting for. In fact, it's the greatest gift we could ever give ourselves or our 5 beautiful little copycats. At the end of the day I don't care if they inherit my dance moves or sarcasm, or Bubbas athleticism or happy personality. I hope they look back and emulate our self reliance and pass it along to their kids.

…but if they had happen to be self-reliant while busting out some wicked dance move, I wouldn't be mad about that.

Looking forward to your life of magic!

Ps our matching dresses were a gift from Brooklyn Blush clothing. So cute right??
