A Day in the Life: a Saturday without Bubba

A day in the life: how I handle the kiddos and home without my husband from FunCheapOrFree.com

I promised you guys a Day in the Life post foreeeeeeeeeever ago. Believe it or not I filmed it, spent hours and hours and hours editing it…then never posted it. Why? Because I’m dumb. And busy. I filmed it in the summer and took so long editing it my schedule flipped a complete 180 once school started, making my summer schedule irrelevant at this point. But have no fear! I have an updated series of DITL videos coming up that gives you a taste of all aspects of our crazy life.

First up is a Day in the Life on a Saturday when Bubba is out of the town. I have 4 kids, a blog event, a neighbor BBQ, naps, a love-note-drop for my son, dinner at a restaurant, and bedtime all by myself. And it just so happens to be a day where I’m insanely tired. Curious how I manage? Check it out below!

(Ps If you want I could technically still post the summer video anyway. It was a much more thorough video and had a lot of good info. So let me know if you care or not whether the schedule is outdated and I’ll see what I can do!)

Watch the video online or watch below:

Do you have any specific questions about my day? Leave them below in a comment and I’ll try to cover them in the next video!

Coming up will be a day in the life with school, carpool, dinnertime with Bubba, and everything in-between. Until then!

  1. We need to start the transition to a big boy bed but our little one uses his crib as a wrestling ring each night before finally going to sleep. How did you get your boys to go to sleep so easily in a bed and not have them climbing out?
Thanks for all your everyday tips. Love them all!

    • Ugh it was SO HARD! We had to remove everything from Beck’s room, bought him a small toddler bed, turned his door handle around, and lock him in. For WEEKS! He would cry himself to sleep outside the door. Once we removed the tiny toddler bed and put him in a huge bed, he slept like a baby every night. Turns out he just hated the small bed! Each kid is different, he was my hardest one but is now one of our best sleepers. Just don’t give in, eventually they learn!

  2. Love your video! Reminds me of my typical day. Crazy! I have 3 kids, ages 6, 4, and 18 mo. I would love to see the summer one too.

    • Twinners! You’re in the “thick of it” just like I am 🙂 It’s beautiful chaos, isn’t it? Thanks for watching!

    • Ok noted! Thanks Melissa. And let me tell you, I swear 1 is the hardest! From there it gets easier because you are forced into more of a routine. Thanks for watching! XO

  3. I envy you for taking 4 kids out for supper.. You are super-woman !

I would love to see your summer video.. I love how you keep it real !!

Question, it seems lately my 5 year old is constantly picking on my 2 year old.. Have u experienced this and any tips ? It seems that every time I start a task, I have to rescue my “baby” from his brother.

    • Haha hardly super woman! Mostly determined to NOT have to cook myself food 😉 But thanks! And as for the 5 year old…must be an age thing, am I right?? My son is going through the same phase. I have started an incentive chart as well as an “I’m bored” chart (because that’s ultimately the root of the problem) so I’ll do a video on both if that would help!

  4. Love it! Your relationship with your kids is adorable <3 About the helmet'ed and armored man….did you film this on Sept 26th?….ComiCon in SLC was my first thought when you saw that. ha! We were in SLC for ComiCon that week because my hubs is a SciFi fan! Such great people watching. lol

    • Haha yes it was during ComiCon! I realized that after I turned off the camera and saw Elsa and Spiderman holding hands, crossing the street 🙂 Made my day! XO

  5. Loved your video so much, sweet lady! Can’t wait to see the other ones. Things are so much different when the hubs is gone, huh? (Thankful that I’ve got a stellar husband like you do!) So much I can relate to with my 3 little ones. You’ve got my wheels spinning about maybe doing my own day in the life video. 😉

  6. Love it! I have a lot of Saturday’s without the husband as well and it feels like survival mode after a long week. You are a rock star! I would love to see the summer video.

    • Aw thanks McKenna! Don’t get me wrong, I’m a train wreck many days. But sometimes it works out fine. Thanks for watching!

  7. loved the video! Would love to see the summer one as well!! It’s not relevant this year any more, but summer will come around again!

  8. Yes! Post the summer video!! I love you Day in the Life! And thank you for a glimpse into your kiddo bedtime routine. It helped a lot. Love your “10 sec” tooth brushing. That makes for independence and a lot less fighting!

  9. Hi, Jordan!

I attempted your Weekly Deep Cleaning Schedule a couple weeks ago. It was going great, until I got to Wednesday (Surfaces). How do you find time to make this happen with the little ones? I found myself overwhelmed trying to make it happen during their nap time! Also, is this your schedule every single week, or just when you feel the house needs a deep clean?

Thank you in advance and thank you for all the phenomenal advice you’ve given this SAHM newbie! You are so fun and so inspirational!

    • Hey Liz! Such a great question. Let me tell you, with 4 little kids the schedule is REALLY tough. What I’ve been doing more is a 10-minute chunk of cleaning as many times per week as I can manage. I explain it here: http://funcheaporfree.com/2014/09/5-ways-a-simple-timer-will-change-your-life/. I will pick something that needs to get done and give myself 10-15 minutes to accomplish as much as I can. And heck, if all else fails, make room in your budget for cleaning ladies once in a while to help you start from scratch so it’s more maintenance than trying to catch up. Good luck!

  10. I loved, loved, loved this! Thank you for sharing and keeping it real. I have been wanting to see the other day in a life video you mentioned filming during a live Q&A and Davey was a tiny baby. Now she is all over there place. I vote yes for posting the other video – I would totally watch it.

  11. Would love to see the summer video! Might be helpful for us Southern Hemisphere mums who are just coming into the hot weather. ☺️
