Introducing…The FCF 10-Pound Challenge for July!

Today I am introducing something new to FCF…
I'm setting a goal to do exercise of some kind 6 days a week (4 of which will be intense), while also making healthier eating choices for the entire month of July.  This will hopefully shed these last 10lbs of baby weight as an added result to getting fit and feeling better.
Why would I do such a crazy thing, you might ask?
Let me back up and explain a bit…
I was always pretty active growing up, mostly with cheerleading, dance, gymnastics and some track and field. I was never much of a born athlete, but was always involved in athletics enough to stay relatively slim. In college I would go to the gym pretty regularly (whether to stay fit or hit on buff gym guys, you'll just never know…), but, again, never stressed too much about overall fitness.

Now, at 27, I'm not nearly as active as I once was. Until I had baby Beck in February, I would walk my dog every morning, giving me at least some consistent exercise. Since then? I think I've walked him once. Having 3 kids in 3 years certainly hasn't helped; my core muscles are shot, as is my back.
I use all the excuses in the book, “I choose to live an active lifestyle, I don't need a gym.” “I chase my kids around all day, that is plenty of exercise.” “I'll be able to exercise consistently when my kids are all in school. Until then it's impossible.”
My back and ribs (6 of them got out of whack when pregnant with my oldest) have been next to unbearable lately. I finally went to the doc, expecting him to prescribe me PT or chiropractics. His prescription?
4 months of Pilates and Yoga. I was ticked.

“Where's my easy button? Can't someone crack and pop me back into place and let me move on? Pilates and Yoga? What a joke. So you're one of those docs. Good to know.”
To make it worse, he prescribed my hubby (Bubba) 1hr of exercise per day because his cholesterol is bad. Bugged me even more.
Well guess what? After thinking about it for longer than 2.3 seconds, I realized…He's right.
All my ailments and things I complain about are from lack of muscle tone, core strength, poor posture, and straight-up weakness!
So, that's it.
I'm tired of making excuses.
I'm tired of feeling old and crickety.
I'm tired of my back and knees hurting.
I'm tired of feeling sluggish and slow.
I'm tired of feeling “soft” with no muscle-tone.
I'm tired of having stiff muscles and not being able to stretch to my toes.
I'm tired of thinking, “I could never do that” when I see people touch their toes or do a triathlon.
I'm tired of being tired all the time.
So…I'm going to challenge myself, embrace change, and I want YOU to play along!

Here's how I plan to do it:

  • I am setting the goal to post a quick update every day for the entire month of July to help my stay accountable. I will also post updates and “weigh-ins” on Instagram so you can follow along.
  • I am doing this with my hubby so we can keep each other motivated.
  • We borrowed my neighbor's Insanity DVD  so we will simply be exercising at home in our living room each night (4x per week), then jogging, swimming, hiking, or doing some other form of exercise together the other days.
  • I am going to make a conscious effort to try to cut back on sugar, eat more fruits and veggies, and make healthier choices when we go out to eat.
While losing 10lbs would rock my socks, I am not as concerned about weight loss as I am about getting in better shape by the end of the month. I want to be able to complete the DVD's fitness test without feeling like I'm going to die. My ultimate goal is increased energy and core strength, and to get cardio stamina back…and look better in a swimsuit 🙂
So, please join me!
Join me in the quest to get healthy this month! Read my posts here.
Post your pictures, encouraging words, advice, or just say hey on Instagram and/or Twitter! Use the hashtag #fcf10lbchallenge to post your own successes and progress! Get your friends on-board! Follow along with my daily updates! If we do this together,
we can do it.

…not to mention we will be having contests and giveaways throughout the month for those playing along…
Another fun idea?
Get your family & Friends involved and make money too!
My family members are all participating in the FCF 10lb challenge. We are all putting $25 in a pot. Whoever loses 10lb by Aug 1 splits the pot. Whoever doesn't, loses their money to the pot. It's a fun way to keep each other motivated and accountable, while giving an even greater incentive for accomplishing it!
So let's hear it…
ARE YOU WITH ME???

  1. I am with you! I have my goal this month to get out of the 190s for my weight and that would be a 6 lb loss. If I lose 10 lbs that would be even better! I've started it off by working out today for an hour…my body feels like jello! Also ate a very healthy salad for lunch and have downed two bottles of water. I'm on week 6 of c25k and loving it and will be finishing it this month! So excited to complete that workout! Looking forward to seeing your updates and those of all the ladies participating in the challenge!

  2. I"m in too.. I I started a new blog for all my ideas, tips, and more @ fromserasmouth.blogspot.com where I will be putting up the 10 pound challenge. I need to lose more than 10 but that's a start. I was always thin but then I got sick, and the medicine they put me on it gained 45 pounds. And since its because of medicine, they weight isn't coming off, which is he most frustrating thing. Let the fun begin 🙂

  3. I was just talking to God (praying) about this. I need to lose weight and I just can't. and have tried everything except authentic community (with accountability). Then, I come across this post. Wow, He really cares me for me. So joining! Thanks, Jordan.

  4. Yay! Thanks for joining, everyone! Not sure if FUN is the word to use, but it will be SO MUCH BETTER having you all join along and keep me motivated. Here's to having a good July!! XOXO

  5. Hi Jordan, I am in – my babyboy was born on February 9th, it's our second baby, our girl is 2years7months old. I carry the little guy around a lot in the sling and we both enjoy it, but still, I got 8 or 9 lbs (it's four kilograms, I am a reader from far-far-away Austria) lingering. And I am tiiiired of not FEELING well and fit, your description fits my body perfectly well. So I am inininin! I will do the 6-weeks-challenges, have you heared of them? Its for push-ups, sit-ups (I will skip those because they are not good for the tummy-muscles, I'll use the plan for another exercise though), dips – maybe you will have a look: http://www.hundredpushups.com/
I am looking forward to posting here and being held accountable, thanks so much for the inspiration!
    all the best from Austria,
    ema

  6. Great idea, I did a similar thing last summer with the help of the book "Reshaping it all" by Candace Cameron Bure and using the site blogilates.com. Free good pilates workouts online. I like free! I ended up losing close to 30lbs. Best of luck to you and your hubby in your fitness endeavor!

  7. Good luck with you challenge!! I'm really proud of you! I have a sort of off topic question. Every week on Mondays and Wednesdays we have swim meets, there are tons of people selling food and clothes and every where I turn little ones are asking for money. Any ideas on how to satisfy their need to "be like everyone else" without spending a lot of money?

  8. I'm definitely IN! I have 9 more pounds to lose of my glorious 50 pounds of pregnancy weight… ahem, my baby is almost 10 months old… I need more motivation, I hate exercise with a passion, especially in this Texas heat! I have started a 30 day green smoothie challenge, and am getting to use my mom's vitamix, which makes them even more amazing! I'm excited to have this to be accountable to as well!

  9. You NEED to try Blogilates videos. Just google it (blogilates.com), Cassey is incredibly positive and so funny, and her videos are amazing. Best of all they're all FREE!! She has really helpful calendars each month, and a beginner's calendar that you can follow along with. If you ever don't have time for a 1+ hour workout (which, I'm sure you're pretty busy with a bunch of kids), her videos are a great way to get even 10-20 minutes in. I have had so much fun (and so much pain!) with her workouts.

I would say that although I think it's great you're trying to workout, losing weight is really tough to do with exercise alone. I think a large part of how you feel comes from what you eat. For me personally, that meant switching from being a vegetarian my whole life to being 100% vegan. I have run a few marathons and half marathons and NEVER lost any significant amount of weight (maybe like 3 lbs max) because you need to keep fueling your body to exercise that much! In order to lose weight you need to

I know that you're all about getting cheap deals and such, but your body needs better food than processed, unnatural stuff. Even if it means spending more money, I think it's worth the sacrifice. I always think about it this way: you're either going to spend money on healthy food, or you're going to spend money on medical bills if you treat your body like crap with a bunch of food that has low nutritional value. That's why I like Blogilates, because she emphases that "abs are made in the kitchen but maintained in the gym!", so it's not just all about exercise.

Two other things I would recommend is to look into choosemyplate.gov (for tips and education, they have a great section on empty calories), and also MyFitnessPal for keeping track of your food.

Best of luck. It's not easy, but it's worth it. I'm assuming you want to around for your kids and partner for a long time, so taking responsibility for YOUR health is only way that's going to be possible.

  10. Does your website have a contact page? I’m having
problems locating it but, I’d like to send you
an email. I’ve got some creative ideas for your blog
you might be interested in hearing. Either
way, great blog and I look forward to seeing it grow over time.
