3-Ingredient Homemade Finger Paint Recipe

A few months ago my son was BORED with a capital B. I decided to do a little project that was easy, free, and was a huge success…

The recipe is so simple!

What you need:
2 Tablespoons sugar
⅓ Cups cornstarch
2 Cup cold water
¼ Cup clear liquid dish soap
Food coloring
What you do:

  • Mix together sugar and cornstarch in a small pan, then slowly add cold water.
I enlisted help from my little guy on this one.
I had all sorts of hopes and dreams that this would be a lifelong memory of the two of us bonding over the stove, lovingly making homemade finger paint together….
yeah.
right.

His attention span lasted all of about .4345 seconds, so I gave him a few bowls of flour and “scoops” to play with. BINGO.

Cheesy smile
    • Cook over low heat, stirring until the mixture becomes a smooth, almost-clear gel (about 5 minutes).

  • Let cool.

I put mine in a baking dish and put it in the fridge because I, like my son, am not patient. Worked fine as far as I could tell!

While we waited, my son had fun making a mess complete disaster of my kitchen.
“paining” with my basting brush
Completely caked in flour!

He had a blast, and really, why not let your kids make a mess once in a while? All I needed was my good ol’ vacuum and a wet rag to clean it all up, wasn’t that big of a deal. It entertained him for probably 30 minutes, which is basically LIGHT YEARS in toddlerhood.

I’m sold.

-Anyhow-

  • When it’s cool, stir in dishwashing liquid.
  • Scoop equal amounts of mixture into containers and stir in food coloring.
My husband had a lunch catered at work forever ago. He was going to throw out these condiment bottles, but in true Jordan fashion, I kept them with no purpose in mind.
See? TOLD you I can’t throw anything away…
They came in handy!
They were the perfect containers for the paint! I was even able to match up the red and yellow…though my food coloring was pink rather than red. Oh well.

I believe you can get those bottles at the dollar store, or even at Walmart for cheap.

And voila! That’s IT! Told you it was easy.
I stripped my son down in the kitchen then we headed to the tub to hose down and try out our new creation.

Painting his knee.

Even Priya loved it.

The paint lasted forever, was really easy to clean up (washed down the tub like a champ) and was FREE to make (because I had all the ingredients on-hand)! Can’t beat that.
Enjoy!
Oh, and you’re welcome ;)
